Research Positions in Experimental/Observational Ultraviolet Astrophysics
California Institute of Technology
Space Astrophysics Laboratory
1200 E. California Blvd. MS 405-47
Pasadena, CA 91125
Attention: Christopher Martin
We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar, Senior Postdoctoral Scholar or Senior Research Fellow appointment in experimental/observational ultraviolet astrophysics. Appointment is contingent on completion of a Ph.D. The Postdoctoral Scholar appointment is for one year, with likely renewal up to three years. The SRF is a three-year appointment, renewable in one-year increments to a maximum of six. This appointment will begin in Winter/Spring 1998. Only one position is available.
The Space Astrophysics Lab carries out investigations in ultraviolet astrophysics using rocket-borne payloads flown as part of the NASA Sounding Rocket Program. Our current project includes the calibration, testing, refurbishment and re-flight(s) of an existing experiment which has been used to study the components of the far-ultraviolet background. Experience with vacuum-ultraviolet instrumentation or space-flight hardware is desirable.
Potential research projects may also include analysis of data from past and future flights. Some fraction of time will be allotted for independent research with opportunities to use all of Caltech's astronomical facilities, including those at Palomar Observatory and the W.M. Keck Observatory.
Applications including a brief statement of research interests, relevant work experience, curriculum vitae, and three letters of reference should reach Caltech before 1 February 1998, but later applications will be considered. AAE/EOE.
