Can quantum invariants read the geometry of a knot?

Quantum invariants, such as the Jones polynomial and its colored version, are powerful algebraic tools in low-dimensional topology. In this talk, I will introduce a construction involving the representation theory of quantum groups and discuss old and recent development on the geometrical content contained by these invariants.
