Humanities Brown Bag Seminar

Wise and not rowdy nor ignorant
Mateusz Falkowski, Howard E. and Susanne C. Jessen Postdoctoral Scholar Teaching Fellow in Early Modern Literature and the Classical Tradition, Caltech,

Abstract: One of the biggest reforms undertaken by the Council of Trent (1545–1563) concerned the nature and practice of episcopacy. As the Catholic Church reoriented itself in response to the Protestant Reformation, prelates debated the history and shape of their own office by looking back at the Apostolic times and examples from Late Antiquity. They also took inspiration from the writings of more contemporary church reformers including Erasmus, despite the fact that in 1559 pope Paul IV forbade the sale and circulation of the entirety of his writings in Catholic lands! What should bishops be like and what should they do according to Erasmus, and how can we trace his inspiration at the council where no one could mention his name?
