Research Interests: Observational Astronomy and Instrumentation
Overview
I am a Research Professor of Physics at Caltech, and my work focuses primarily on observational studies of galaxy clusters and the development of millimeter-wave instrumentation with superconducting detectors. Our group has recently, or is currently, leading projects related to: understanding how newly accreted material is thermalized within galaxy clusters; assessing the geometry of major mergers between galaxy clusters to probe the astrophysics related to structure assembly on the largest scales; quantifying the impact of halo elongation/orientation and contaminating emission from member galaxies on survey selection and halo mass estimates for precision cosmology from galaxy clusters; and measuring the distribution and thermodynamics of the diffuse gas within the filamentary connections of the cosmic web that comprises over half of the baryons in the present-day universe.
Our group works with a wide range of observational datasets, including X-ray, optical, radio, and the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. I am PI of the terrestrial millimeter-wave photometric imager SKIPR, which includes a 1.5 meter telescope currently deployed at JPL and a focal plane comprised of 4000 superconducting kinetic inductance detectors. I am also PI of the OLIMPO balloon-borne mission concept that aims to probe the dynamics of structure formation and diffuse filamentary gas via a long duration flight from McMurdo Station in Antarctica.
