Katie Jameson
Overview
Katie Jameson holds a B.A. in Astronomy & Physics from Boston University, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Maryland. Dr. Jameson is currently the Lead Project Manager for the Deep Synoptic Array (DSA) and is based at Caltech's Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) in Big Pine, CA. While she officially began working for Caltech in 2023, she gained familiarity with OVRO during her Ph.D. as an observer for the Combined Array for Millimeter Astronomy (CARMA) starting in 2010. Her research has focused on using large radio observatories, including the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and the Australian Square Kilometer Array (ASKAP), to better understand how gas is converted to stars in nearby galaxies. Before fully transitioning to project management, Dr. Jameson spent 6 years as an astronomy researcher in Australia, including as a Bolton Fellow at CSIRO, and served as the Project Manager for the Galactic ASKAP Survey (GASKAP).
Throughout her career, Dr. Jameson has worked to improve equity and inclusion in astronomy. While at the University of Maryland, she founded the Graduate Resources Advancing Diversity with Maryland Astronomy and Physics (GRAD-MAP) program in 2013, which has continued for over 10 years. During her time in Australia, she was the CSIRO Space & Astronomy's Diversity & Inclusion Manager and Chair of the Astronomical Society of Australia's Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity in Astronomy (IDEA) Chapter where she led the creation of a mutual aid fund to support the society's members and revamp of the criteria for the Pleiades Awards. Dr. Jameson's dedication to improving equity and inclusion continues in her work with Caltech and the DSA, particularly through the project's astronomy education and public outreach efforts in rural Nevada.
